About Seahorse Institute

Seahorse Institute is a Bahamian non-profit organization founded in 2010 by Dr. Michelle Major, an internationally acclaimed expert in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The Seahorse Institute aims to provide children with developmental disabilities and their families a chance to grow and learn as respected members of society. They offer intensive multidisciplinary interventions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, language disorders, and related behavioral challenges.

Dr. Michelle Major

Founder of Seahorse Institute

I knew from an early age growing up in The Bahamas that I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children,” says Dr. Major. “My eyes were opened to the world of autism and other developmental disabilities at college in the States. I found that with the right treatment provided as early as possible, these children can accomplish so much and as a consequence, families can regain hope and optimism for their children. So I worked with some of the top minds in the field at some of the most effective organizations to learn their research-based techniques. Then, I brought my years of education and experience home to The Bahamas and founded the Seahorse Institute. It is now my joy and privilege to work with these amazing, deserving children and train others to do the same.

Campaign Synopsis

The Seahorse Institute wants to bring awareness to the malpractice and false information being targeted to neurodivergent persons and/or their guardians. In The Bahamas, there is a lack of information catered toward Autism Spectrum Disorders and Developmental Delays in children and adults. The Seahorse Institute aims to break the stigma throughout The Bahamas that assumes being neurodivergent means you cannot be a contributing member of society. Autism should be seen as a superpower, something that makes you unique - not something that limits the value you can add to your community.
